GREATER NEW HAVEN Welcome! The Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles, part of the Neighborhood Music School Ensemble Program, are comprised of the Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble, generally for advanced high school students, and the Concert Orchestra and Concert Band for middle school and young high school students. Offering a range of orchestral opportunities for young musicians, these groups enrich the lives of many dedicated students from the region’s public and private schools. The combined offerings of our Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles give young musicians the opportunity to explore rich orchestral and symphonic band literature, develop performance skills, and benefit from excellent orchestral training under professional conductors and to meet other high achieving students from the area. 127 students overall come for weekly rehearsals from 28 towns throughout and beyond the region. In addition to these four large ensembles, NMS has over 100 other ensembles for a variety of ages, skill levels and interests. The Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra, founded in 1961 by Keith Wilson, then Director of the Yale Band, is one of the premier youth groups in New England and in recent years has won top awards in New York, D.C., Toronto and Boston. In March 2007, the GNHYO will participate in the CT Youth Orchestra Festival at Woolsey Hall. We welcome Katherine Kilburn in her inaugural concert as conductor of the Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra.
